LJ Idol, Introduction

My father likes to walk into my room, look around, and say, as if impressed "It's like visiting the Museum of Beth." Apparently, my room speaks volumes about me.

To start with, it's filled with books. In an 8x10' space, I have 96 linear feet of shelf space and over 700 books. Mostly novels, with a good scattering of travelogues and a collection of Bill Bryson. One shelf is devoted entirely to Sherlock Holmes, another to graphic novels. I have most of the books sorted alphabetically, but those I read the most always gravitate towards the shelves nearest my bed. Right now in arm's reach, I have House of Leaves, the Temeraire series, and Stieg Larsson's trilogy (All of which I highly recommend).

One shelf is full of octopuses. I collected those for years. Sprawled across my ceiling are sixteen tentacles, from the two Doctor Octopus costumes I made in college. They're covered in glow-in-the-dark stickers, and so is my ceiling.

Each post of my bed is covered in hats, stacks of them. I think there's a handpuppet in there, too. There are more hats wedged into the few empty spaces in my closet. My friends? They call me Hats.

All of my blankets are fandom blankets. I have Spider-Man, Batman, Star Wars, Captain Jack Sparrow, Harry Potter and Legolas, all represented on my bed, and a stuffed TARDIS among my pillows. Under the bed is a giant box of yarn. I knit twenty foot scarves. Behind my bed is a painting of the Lady Washington, the tall ship on which I worked all summer. On my wall by my door are the two patches I earned in that time. I'm waiting for the right hat or coat to stitch them to.

My room is too small. I'm twenty-six, with a BA in English, and living with my parents in the room I've had since I was seven, because I am saving money to buy a boat. Another box under my bed is full of parts for a Monitor self-steering vane, so I can sleep while I sail alone across an ocean. Across all the oceans I intend to sail around the world, as soon as I can build up the capital I need to go. I have all of the advice books by those who have done it before.

So this is my room. If we're talking on LJ or AIM, I am most likely here, wrapped in fandom, watching my cat freaking out at the deer outside the window. I'm Hats, and it's a pleasure to meet you all. Good luck.

This is my entry for LJ Idol. Week 0, Introduction.

Wow, I love your dreams. I would love to sail and travel more.

And I love books, I have WAY too many of them. But they are like little worlds (sometimes) and I don't want to give up my chance to visit them by giving them away...(I guess that sounds odd)

With so many hats, are you always wearing one? (just curious) Do you knit hats?

I look forward to your entries:)

In the winter, yes. I sleep wearing a blue watch cap that a friend of mine knitted for me.

And no, alas, I knit only scarves because I learned to knit from youtube and can pretty much only do straight lines.

Thank you.

I like the intro! The TARDIS sounds of cool. I've got way too many books as well. But they're mostly trashy romance novels. ^^

I think the closest I have to trashy romance is a parody of Twilight and all the Diana Gabaldon books.

So I was correct in saying your house is a museum, when people come to see 'em. :P Looking forward to entries, of course.

I only read it once, but I love being able to pick it up and show people what it's like to go mad.

How cool that you are going to sail around the room! I think that's awesome.

Hello and good luck!

this is pretty neat. I am a book and DVD collection, both which are my obsessions. I hope you get your boat soon, will it be a house boat?

Oct. 28th, 2010 10:41 pm (UTC)
No, no, houseboats are pretty but useless and a maintenance nightmare. It's going to be something like a Contessa 26 or a Pearson Triton. Something to sail around the world in.

A stuffed Tardis pillow? Cool! Does it make that sound?

Great intro. Look forward to reading. Good luck.

Alas, no. It's a hand-made job from a friend, and has a yellow cat-toy pompom on top.

You remind me of my geek friend who moved halfway around the world. Her apartment was crammed with books, comic books, DVDs, toys, etc. etc.

And sailing around the world? By yourself? That's just awesome.

Hopefully not all by myself all the way around, but that'll happen as it does.

This is twenty years of book collecting. I still have the very first book I ever read on these shelves.

(It was Sam and the Firefly.)

A stuffed TARDIS? I want one of those! I also think books are an excellent method of introduction, because I'm one of those people who walks up to the bookshelf whenever I'm in someone's home and starts looking for things I've read. House of Leaves is on my list of books to read next, after I finish my re-reading of The Dark Is Rising.

Nice to meet you, too!

I need to start making these TARDISes, don't I?

I have all of those, too. XD Neatly filed under C, on the shelves immediately to my right.

I hope it will be, and not three years of boredom stretched around a few dozen hours of sheer screaming terror ending in Cuba when I run out of money and have to sell my boat to a drug-runner and beg my parents to fly me home.

I built them all myself! And they're all built-ins, too, which is important to me. I sleep under them, after all. Don't want them toppling when my crack-addled kitten jumps on top of one trying to catch a mosquito.

Also, want to be friends on NaNo? I'm TheHats there.

I've got a BA in English too, although my desire to sail around the world involves a large cruise ship, LOL.

Ooh, if you're going to do that, do it on The World. I saw it in person last summer, and it's amazing. Only costs approximately $4,000,000,000.
